Claro luta Course Burton X Nolan. 3.03.
MATT RAUCH – The process of making the Burton/Nola fight from #303 was long and complex – and it was great fun, too. It begins, as always, with the story – at the beginning of season 3, the producers told me that they were planning an epic battle between the two of us, and that they were intending to make it the biggest and best fight we had done on the show to date – two savage and mysterious characters fighting to the death. At that point, I began the process of getting in physical shape with our trainers. Then about three weeks before we shot it, our stunt team, under the direction of Marcus Young, created a mock-up of the fight based on the scripted version. The complexity of the sequence was added to by the fact that the producers wanted it to appear as if the whole fight was one continuous take. This made the rehearsal and preparation extremely detailed. Odette and I started learning it at that point, under the direction of our two incredible stunt doubles, Dave Macomber and Boni Yanigasawa. Because of the longer takes, much of the fight is actually us – the doubles are certainly in there a bit, but it isn’t too often. They had to teach us a lot! Those days were extremely challenging, both physically and mentally, but we also had a wonderful time together. There was a lot of laughter – Dave and Boni are so so great, and Odette and I became good friends. We trained essentially all day every day for about a week together, then had a day of camera rehearsal on location so that we could integrate the camera operator, Bud Kremp, and the rest of the crew. The day of shooting was very challenging – it was the hottest day of the summer and very humid. It took about 12 hours to shoot, and when it was done, Odette and I were both pretty exhausted. (Not to mention bruised!) But we knew it would be special, and it’s extremely gratifying to us that it turned out so well. But it was a total team effort – our wonderful crew are the real heroes of that day.
GF – Burton is so unique character, and you can put something so deep and insane and without saying much. At the same time it show everything he needs to demonstrate. You which is a Shakesperian actor with a history of working with Al Pacino and large pieces on theater, which is the difficulty that building a silent killer and faithful?
MR – My creative process almost always starts with a dual question; what does this person want/need, and what is his physicality? So there’s a simultaneous internal and external thought. In Burton’s case, when I first auditioned for the role I had a very quick sense that his dominant thought was total and complete loyalty to Proctor – that in a world where trust is hard to come by, Proctor trusts Burton totally and completely, and Burton would do literally anything for him. And physically, I quickly became very interested in a sense of stillness – the notion that Burton could almost disappear in a room full of people, that you wouldn’t notice him unless you were really paying attention, and that everything he did or said was carefully considered. In the Banshee universe, that stillness was fairly unusual. Also it was interested for me to have a chance to work on a much smaller scale, so I pursued that as vigorously as I could. That micro-scale paid off as the show went ahead, because small gestures – removing glasses, tilting the head, sometimes just a look – came to have real impact.
GF – Clay Burton and Kai Proctor has a great history together, I find it interesting that dichotomy them and Hood and Job are two stories of “love” and very interesting loyalty. Burton and Kai we see little in flashback when the two meet Burton looked very fragile, when Burton met Kai is that had this great change? For example, when Job meet Hood he also looked very fragile, unsure fight, how much you know and can build this background, how long they know each other? what you can say about it.
MR – The relationship between Proctor and Burton is certainly a kind of love story. The history and complexity of it will never be fully known, but from the beginning of production, Ulrich and I were always interested in finding ways to connect – a look, a shared gesture, things like that – and communicate that Burton and Proctor share virtually everything. Burton knows all of the details of Proctor’s life, and Proctor trusts him with those details. Ulrich was very generous to include me in his process from the beginning, so that right from the jump it is clear that Burton is, quite literally, Proctor’s right hand man. The Origins episode between Burton and Proctor from season 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xurB-ELazSE) explains a little bit of this – Proctor rescues Burton from an un-named captor, and we assume that Burton is forever loyal. In the Burton/Nola fight, Burton flashes back to his first kill – a strangling; perhaps this victim is the person who imprisoned him. And in the 4th season Origins (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLaEMzDati0) we learn that Burton had a complex relationship with his father – so perhaps in some ways Proctor has taken the mantle of that father role. I suppose that ultimately the details aren’t necessarily important – and the mystery of Burton is part of why he is so frightening. Loyalty and trust are what makes him tick.
GF -These days had a guy who commented that Burton is like evil Clark Kent, When his take the glasses off, he is immortal and perfect killer. Only with Kryptonite to stop you?
MR – Burton is certainly no Superman – to me, he’s very very human – and as we leaned in the finale he is not immortal; no one in the Banshee universe is. However, I did spend a lot of time thinking about what made him so dangerous, and why he was so hard to kill. The idea essentially came down to willpower – Burton was unwilling to ever, ever quit. Once he decides you are a threat, there’s nothing that will stop him instead of death. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy it – it’s simply a means to an end; the end being protection of Proctor. And nothing – pain, injury, fear – will stop that. He has trained his mind to do one thing, and when he removes his glasses he has a singular and relentless focus. I think it’s that focus that makes him so frightening.
GF – Few people know about the Banshee Origins, and this season you directed and wrote some episodes. Many great by the way. Tell us what is the Origins and this experience for you?
MR – Having an opportunity to write and direct some of the Origins was incredible – I feel so grateful to the producers who made that happen. I had been interested in writing for the show for a few seasons, and during season 2 I submitted an Origins for Emmett (Demetrius Grosse) to both Greg Yaitanes and Jonathan Tropper. They responded very strongly to it at the time, and from there it kind of built momentum. During production of season 4, I heard that they were planning the Origins arc and I asked Adam Targum about it – he told me they were very open to my participating and that I should go ahead and write one, just so they could get a sense of what I might do. So I wrote one – for Burton (‘Drown’) – and they essentially came back to me with ‘we’re shooting this – can you write more?’ Of course I was thrilled, I immediately said yes, and I asked as nicely as I could about the possibility of directing. The whole producing team – Adam, Jonathan, OC, and Bob Phillips – were all extremely supportive of the idea. They were really amazing – Adam and Jonathan gave me such helpful writing notes, OC talked to me about directing (and when I thanked him he said ‘we trust you – we know you can do it’ – I mean, wow), and Bob Phillips and our UPM Robert Scott gave me all the support in the world. It was rather fantastic for me, and I learned a tremendous amount. Those people made it happen. I am incredibly grateful and humbled by the trust they put in me. It was a wonderful feeling, to be entrusted with that responsibility, and to be able to work with the actors and crew who I came to know and respect so much. I was very pleased with how they turned out – and one of the proudest moments in my life was a call from Greg Yaitanes telling me how much he had enjoyed them. And I had a wonderful time, too – I loved the process, and I’d definitely like to direct more in the future. Here’s hoping the opportunity presents itself – I would jump at the chance.
GF – Banshee has so many good characters, even those supporting or those who appear less, or only in one episode. And you’re an actor who has this character that is so striking to us. All leave their mark. As you see this quality in this show?
MR – I can’t say too much about leaving a mark – that’s up to the viewer. But I do know this; the size of the role, or the amount that the character speaks, does not matter one bit. My job was to make Burton real and scary and layered and human. My first day of shooting, Jonathan said to me that ‘Banshee is a dangerous place, and Burton is the most dangerous person there.’ I just tried to take it from there. The directors I worked with the most – Greg Yaitanes and Loni Peristere and OC Madsen – helped me carefully craft the performance; the stuff with the glasses, the dual nature of him. The whole Banshee family served me so well by shooting Burton in a way that helped tell his story – particularly our amazing DP Chris Faloona and his team, and the entire wardrobe hair and makeup department, paticularly Patia Prouty and Frank Helmer and Ange Grmolyes, who crafted Burton’s look so gorgeously and took such good care of me as the character evolved. I was never trying to leave a mark – I was trying to be true to the character and serve the story. If a mark was left, I am very gratified by that, but in the process it’s not helpful to think too much about the result.
GF – What’s your episode / favorite moment of the show?
MR – There are so many moments throughout the series that I am very proud of, that I might describe as a favorite, or close to a favorite. In terms of Burton; the Burton/Nola fight, certainly. There’s a couple of tracking shots with Burton in season 3 – one in the strip club, one outside the morgue – that I personally love. In terms of full episode, until this weekend I’d say my favorites were “The Truth About Unicorns’ (205) and ‘Tribal’ (305), neither of which has me in it, sadly! 🙂
But then I saw the finale, and it is now without a doubt my favorite episode. OC Madsen’s direction, the gorgeous script, and a whole bunch of fantastic performances that wrap up the series in a satisfying (and inevitable) way. And I must admit, I was very proud of how my final scene with Ulrich turned out. It was a difficult scene to shoot – both because we were wet and cold and exhausted, but also because the content of the scene was tough. Ulrich and I have known each other for a long time and we loved working together, so those kinds of farewells can be very challenging. I was hoping that Burton’s wounded humanity – and his deep love for Proctor – would come out. And I think they did. I can be very hard on myself, but I was happy with the finished product. And my own performance aside, I believe it’s a genuinely great episode – the best of the series – and I would hold it up against anything else on TV right now. Watching it made me so proud to be a part of the show; it’s a journey that I have loved, and I will be forever grateful to have been a resident of Banshee, Pa. I love our Banshee family, and I always will.
Eu amo a nossa família Banshee, e eu sempre amarei.
GF – We always love banshee too.
Thank you for burton and the show.
